FAQ

Flooring questions, answered

My floor is buckling or cupping. What happened?+

Boards that cup (edges higher than the middle) or buckle up off the subfloor are almost always reacting to moisture: a slow leak from a dishwasher, fridge line or bathroom, high indoor humidity, or damp coming up from a crawlspace or slab. Find and stop the water first. Replacing boards before the source is fixed means doing the job twice.

There's a soft spot in my floor. Is that serious?+

It can be. A floor that flexes or feels spongy usually means the subfloor underneath is damaged, often by a long-running leak near a toilet, tub or appliance. Keep heavy furniture and appliances off it and mention it when you book. The pro may need to check the subfloor and framing, not just the surface.

Anything to know before old flooring comes up?+

If your home was built before the 1980s, old vinyl tiles, sheet flooring and the black glue under them can contain asbestos. Do not sand, scrape or break them up yourself until they have been tested. Also tell the pro what is under the current floor if you know (slab, plywood, an older floor), since that changes the prep.

Does Roger charge homeowners anything?+

No. Roger is free for homeowners. The pro you are matched with charges for the work, and Roger does not add a markup on top of their price.
