FAQ

Carpentry questions, answered

My stair railing is loose. Can it wait?+

Not for long. A railing is a safety part, and a loose one tends to give way at the worst moment: when someone leans on it or grabs it after a slip. Have everyone use the wall side until it's fixed, and book it soon, especially with kids or older adults at home.

I found soft, crumbling wood. Is it rot?+

Wood that is soft, dark, or crumbles when you press a screwdriver into it is usually rot, and rot means water. Around windows, doors and exterior trim, the cause is often failed caulk or paint. The carpenter can replace the damaged wood, but ask them to find where the water got in, or the new wood will rot too.

Do I need a permit?+

Repairs and trim usually don't. Changes to framing, walls, stairs or decks often do, and the rules vary by city. A local pro should know what your area requires. If you plan to remove or cut into a wall, say so up front so the job goes to someone who handles that scope.

Does Roger charge homeowners anything?+

No. Roger is free for homeowners. The pro you are matched with charges for the work, and Roger does not add a markup on top of their price.
