A sweep before the season, smoke rolling back into the room, water around the chimney. Describe it and Roger books one local chimney pro and confirms the time.

Chimney & Fireplace questions, answered
How often should a chimney be inspected?+
Once a year is the standard fire-safety recommendation. It applies to wood-burning fireplaces and stoves, and to the flues that vent furnaces and other fuel-burning appliances. Wood fires leave creosote in the chimney, which is flammable, and a sweep removes it.
I think I had a chimney fire. What now?+
Signs include a loud roaring or popping sound, dense smoke, or a strong hot smell. If a fire is happening, get everyone out and call 911. Afterward, do not use the fireplace again until it has been inspected, because a chimney fire can crack the flue liner and let heat reach the wood framing next time.
Smoke comes into the room when I light a fire. Why?+
Common causes are a closed or partly closed damper, a cold flue, a blocked chimney (a nest, debris or heavy creosote), or a house so tight the fire can't draw enough air. Put the fire out and open a window. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm, and book an inspection before using it again.
Does Roger charge homeowners anything?+
No. Roger is free for homeowners. The pro you are matched with charges for the work, and Roger does not add a markup on top of their price.
