Garage door stops halfway? Why it reverses or stalls mid-travel

A door that stops partway up or down is usually a travel limit, a force setting, a track obstruction, or a spring losing tension. Here's how to tell which — and what's safe to adjust.

A door that stops halfway is doing one of two things: it's hitting resistance it thinks is an obstruction, or the opener has been told that halfway is the end. Which one depends on whether it stops in the same spot every time.

Stops in the same spot every time

  • Travel limits set wrong — the opener has limit settings that tell it where 'fully open' and 'fully closed' are. If they drifted or were set after a repair, the door stops short. Most openers have two adjustment screws or a settings mode for this; the manual shows where.
  • Something in the track — a bent section, a stray screw, or a roller that's chipped will stop the door at the same height. Look along both tracks with a flashlight.
  • A worn spot in the door — a hinge that's failing or a panel seam that's spread will bind at the same point in travel.

Stops in different spots, or reverses

  • Force setting too low — the opener is reading normal effort as an obstruction. This is also an adjustment, but be careful: turning force up masks a real problem and can defeat the safety reverse. If you need to crank it more than a little, something else is wrong.
  • Spring losing tension — the door is heavier than the opener expects, so the motor gives up mid-lift. Disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand: it should float at waist height. If it drops or feels heavy, the springs need adjustment or replacement, and that's a pro job.
  • Safety sensors — a door going down that stops and reverses is the photo-eyes. Check for a blinking sensor light and anything in the beam.
  • Cold weather — lubricant thickens and the door drags. A garage-door lubricant on rollers, hinges, and springs solves most seasonal stalling.

What's safe to try

Clearing the tracks, lubricating the moving parts, checking the sensors, and adjusting travel limits per the manual are all fine. Leave the springs alone, and don't keep raising the force setting — an opener set to push through resistance is an opener that will push through a car bumper or a person.

When to call and what it usually costs

If the door fails the balance test, if a track is bent, or if adjustments don't hold, have a technician look. A limit and force calibration with a tune-up is a minor visit.
