Garage door opener won't work? How to tell what's wrong

A simple walk-through to tell whether it's the remote, the sensors, the power, or the opener itself — and what's safe to try.

"The opener won't work" covers a lot of different problems, and you can narrow it down in a couple of minutes without any tools. The trick is to figure out how much of the system is actually dead.

Narrow it down

  • Only the remote fails, wall button works → almost always a remote battery or a re-pair. Cheapest fix, usually DIY.
  • Nothing responds — remote and wall button both dead → check power first: the outlet, the breaker, and that the opener is plugged in. If power's fine, it's likely the logic board or motor.
  • Opener hums or the light blinks but the door won't close → look at the safety sensors near the floor. A bumped bracket or a blocked beam makes the door refuse to close and reverse. Realigning them is often a DIY win.
  • Motor runs but the door doesn't move → the trolley may be disconnected (the pull cord), or the drive belt/chain or gear is worn.

What's safe to try — and what isn't

Safe: new remote battery, re-pairing the remote, cleaning and realigning the photo-eye sensors, confirming power, and checking whether the manual release cord got pulled. Not worth DIY: opening up the motor housing, replacing the logic board, or anything where the door itself feels heavy or off-balance — that points to a spring or cable, not the opener.

If the simple checks don't bring it back, describe what you're seeing — which parts respond, which don't — and a pro can pinpoint it fast.

Common questions

Why does my garage door opener hum but not open?
A humming motor that won't move the door often means a broken spring, a disconnected trolley, or a worn gear. If the door also feels heavy by hand, suspect the spring — and don't force it.
My remote stopped working but the wall button works — why?
That almost always points to the remote itself: a dead battery or lost pairing. Replace the battery and re-pair it to the opener before assuming anything's wrong with the motor.
How do I know if it's the opener or the door?
If the motor runs but the door won't move, or the door feels very heavy to lift by hand, the problem is usually the door's springs or cables, not the opener. A pro can confirm which in person.
