Garage door won't open in cold weather? Why it happens — and what to do

The first cold snap is when garage doors quit. Stiff grease, contracted metal, a door frozen to the slab, and weak remote batteries all show up at once. What to check, what not to force, and what a tune-up actually fixes.

Garage door companies get their busiest week of the year on the first hard freeze. Nothing breaks overnight — the cold just exposes everything that was already marginal. A spring near the end of its life, grease that was overdue for replacement, a door slightly out of balance: all of it works fine in September and fails in January.

The important part is knowing which cold-weather problems you can clear yourself in five minutes, and which ones mean stop pressing the button.

Stop and don't force it if

  • The opener strains, hums, or the motor runs but the door doesn't move. Forcing it can burn out the motor or strip the drive gear.
  • The door lifts an inch, then stops or reverses.
  • You hear a loud bang from the garage — that is usually a spring, and cold is a common moment for a worn one to let go.
  • The door is visibly crooked, or one side lifted and the other didn't.
  • You have to pull hard on the emergency release to get any movement.

The cold-weather causes, most common first

**The door is frozen to the concrete.** The rubber bottom seal sits in whatever melted and refroze under it. The opener reads that resistance as an obstruction and reverses. This is the single most common one and the easiest to fix.

**Thickened grease.** Old lithium grease and factory lubricant stiffen as temperatures drop, so rollers and hinges bind and the opener has to fight the door. A door that was quietly dragging in autumn stops moving entirely in winter.

**Contracted metal.** Steel tracks and hardware shrink slightly in the cold, which tightens tolerances that were already narrow. Small misalignments that never mattered start to bind.

**Weak batteries.** Remote and keypad batteries lose voltage in the cold. A remote that works from three feet in the driveway but not from the street is usually a battery, not a receiver.

**Condensation on the safety sensors.** Frost or fogging on the photo eyes breaks the beam, and the door refuses to close (and blinks at you). Wipe both lenses dry and check they still face each other.

**Opener sensitivity settings.** Most openers have force and travel adjustments set in mild weather. A door that needs slightly more force in winter can trip the safety cutoff even though nothing is broken.

What you can safely try

  • Check the bottom seal for ice. Free it with warm — not boiling — water, or work a plastic scraper along the seam. Never use a metal blade or an open flame near the rubber.
  • Clear packed snow and ice from the tracks near the floor and from under the door.
  • Replace the remote and keypad batteries before assuming the opener has failed.
  • Wipe both safety sensor lenses and confirm the indicator lights are steady, not blinking.
  • Check that the wall button's lock or vacation mode is off.
  • Lubricate rollers, hinges and the spring with a garage-door-specific lubricant — not WD-40, which is a solvent and strips what is there.

What a technician does that you can't

Balance is the real winter test, and it is the one thing worth a pro visit. With the door disconnected from the opener, a balanced door should stay put when raised halfway. If it slams down or flies up, the springs are wrong for the door — and an unbalanced door makes the opener carry weight it was never meant to. That is what kills openers in cold weather.

A tune-up also means adjusting the force and travel limits for the season, checking cable tension and roller wear, tightening hardware the door has shaken loose all year, and replacing lubricant that has gone stiff. Spring and cable work stays a pro job in any weather — those parts are under enough tension to cause serious injury.

What the visit usually involves and costs

A seasonal tune-up is one of the least expensive things a garage door technician does, and it is the visit most likely to prevent a bigger one. If the cold exposed a worn spring, cracked rollers, or a frayed cable, those get replaced in the same visit and the price reflects the parts and the tensioned work involved. The technician confirms the price in person after seeing the door.
